RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly aggressive malignancy about 50% of PDAC are metastatic at presentation. In this study, we evaluated PDAC demographics, annual trend analysis, racial disparities, survival rate, and the role of different treatment modalities in localized and metastatic disease. METHODS: A total of 144,824 cases of PDAC were obtained from the SEER database from 2000 to 2018. RESULTS: The median age was 69 years, with a slightly higher incidence in males (52%) and 80% of all cases were white. Among cases with available data, 43% were grade III tumors and 57% were metastatic. The most common site of metastasis was the liver (15.7%). The annual incidence has increased steadily from 2000 to 2018. The overall observed (OS) 5-year survival rate was 4.4% (95% CI 4.3-4.6%), and 5 years cause-specific survival (CSS) was 5% (95% CI 5.1-5.4%). The 5-year survival with multimodal therapy (chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation) was 22% (95% CI 20.5-22.8%). 5-year CSS for the blacks was lower at 4.7% (95% CI 4.2-5.1%) compared to the whites at 5.3% (95% CI 5.1-5.4%). Multivariate analysis found male gender and black race associated with worse prognosis. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis found multimodal therapy to have the best outcomes in all three stages. CONCLUSION: PDAC is an aggressive malignancy with male gender and black race are associated with a poor prognosis. Surgery with chemoradiation was associated with the best overall survival. With steadily increasing rates of PDAC, improved treatment modalities are paramount to improving survival in these patients.

RESUMO

This innovative work aims to develop highly biocompatible and degradable nanoparticles by encapsulating haemoglobin (Hb) within poly-ε-caprolactone for novel biomedical applications. We used a modified double emulsion solvent evaporation method to fabricate the particles. A Scanning electron microscope (SEM) characterized them for surface morphology. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopies (UV-visible) elucidated preserved chemical and biological structure of encapsulated haemoglobin. The airproof equilibrium apparatus obtained the oxygen-carrying capacity and P50 values. The DPPH assay assessed free radical scavenging potential. The antibacterial properties were observed using four different bacterial strains by disk diffusion method. The MTT assay investigates the cytotoxic effects on mouse fibroblast cultured cell lines (L-929). The MTT assay showed that nanoparticles have no toxicity over large concentrations. The well-preserved structure of Hb within particles, no toxicity, high oxygen affinity, P50 value, and IC50 values open the area of new research, which may be used as artificial oxygen carriers, antioxidant, and antibacterial agents, potential therapeutic agents as well as drug carrier particles to treat the cancerous cells. The novelty of this work is the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of developed nanoparticles are not been reported yet. Results showed that the prepared particles have strong antioxidant and antibacterial potential.

RESUMO

The sugarcane industry often utilizes effluent for irrigation purposes; however, its intricate composition and elevated metal contaminants pose a potential risk of soil and crop contamination. Consequently, it is imperative to employ effective strategies to ensure the safe utilization of this resource for crop cultivation. One such strategy involves the dilution of sugarcane industry effluent. Dilution is a practical approach to mitigate its toxicity, minimizing its adverse impact on soil and crop health. That's why the current study explored the best dilution of sugarcane industrial effluent (SW) for cultivating canola varieties. A total of 15 canola varieties were cultivated 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% SW. Results showed that 60% SW Faisalabad Canola and Punjab Canola improved germination, shoot length, root length, shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, and chlorophyll contents compared to other treatments and control. AARI Canola and CON-III showed poor growth and chlorophyll contents under 60%SW. Dunkled and Oscar cultivars showed moderate improvement in growth and chlorophyll contents under 60SW. The 60% SW can be recommended for maximum growth benefits in canola cultivars, specifically Faisalabad Canola and Punjab Canola. At 20SW, the root dry weight of Faisalabad Canola increased by 2.7%, while Punjab Canola increased by 3.4%. Canola showed the highest increase in POD activity compared to the control, with a 55.45% increase, followed by Sandal Canola, with a 43.26% increase. However, additional field-level experiments are needed to determine the best cultivars suitable for optimal growth under 80SW and 60SW irrigation conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: CBC (complete blood count) tests, along with RPM (Renal parameters) and LFT (Liver function tests), are clinically important for coronavirus patients; curcumin can serve as a possible treatment for SARS- CoV. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine the relationship of CBC parameters with renal parameters and liver function tests and to develop the hypothesis that curcumin may be the best and non-invasive drug for coronavirus. Materials &Methods: The differences between the results of 91 confirmed cases of covid-19 (symptomatic and asymptomatic) and 100 controls were assessed by an independent t-test and Mann-Witney U Wilcoxon test. Microscopy, hematological tools, and techniques were used to assess the improvements/abnormalities in blood components and parameters. RESULTS: This is a case control study along with the feasibility of curcumin as covid treatment. The association between parameters was assessed by Pearson & Spearman correlation analysis. The level of significance was p<0.05. Changes were observed in urea (p=0.000), creatinine (p=0.02), total bilirubin (P=0.000), SGPT (ALT) (p=0.000), RBC (p=0.001), HGB (p=0.001), MCV (p=0.002), MCH (p=0.03), MPV, PDW, NE%, LY%, and MO% EO% (p=0.00), in comparison to normal controls. Differences in the correlation of electrolytes, RPM, and LFT tests along with CBC parameters in Pakistani and Chinese individuals provided a new idea for using various diagnostic and therapeutic tools in different ethnic groups. The covid-19 infected blood components and parameters showed rapid improvement/recovery, especially the total count of platelets and WBCs (lymphocytes and basophils), HGB, HCT, MCV, and MCH. CONCLUSION: Curcumin drugs can be used as an immediate remedy/treatment to cure COVID-19 patients.

RESUMO

There is a lack of objective tools for monitoring treatment response in extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). This study aimed to explore the utility of inflammatory biomarkers from the dry blood spots (DBS) as a tool for monitoring treatment response in EPTB. In a prospective cohort study, 40 inflammatory biomarkers were investigated in DBS samples from 105 EPTB cases using a Luminex platform. The samples were taken before, and, at the end of the 2nd and 6th months of treatment. A total of 11 inflammatory host biomarkers changed significantly with treatment in all EPTB patients. CXCL9/MIG, CCL20, CCL23, CXCL10/IP-10, CXCL1, CXCL2, and CXCL8 significantly declined in our cohort of EPTB (48 TB pleuritis and 57 TB lymphadenitis) patients at both time points. A biosignature consisting of MIG, CCL23, and CXCL2, corresponded with the treatment response in 81% of patients in the 2nd month and 79% of patients at the end of treatment. MIG, CCL23, IP-10, and CXCL2 changed significantly with treatment in all patients including those showing partial clinical response at the 2nd month of treatment. The changes in the levels of inflammatory biomarkers in the DBS correspond with the treatment success and can be developed as a routine test in low-resource settings.

RESUMO

In this study, Machine learning (ML) models integrated with genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) have been developed to predict, evaluate, and analyze biochar yield using biomass properties and process operating conditions. Comparative study of different ML algorithms integrated with GA and PSO were performed to improve the ML models architecture and parameters selection. The results proposed that Ensembled Learning Tree (ELT-PSO) model outperformed all other models and is favored for biochar yield prediction (R2 = 0.99, RMSE = 2.33). The partial dependence plots (PDPs) analysis shows the potential effects of each influencing parameter impact on the biochar yield and as well as shows that how these factors will interact during the pyrolysis process. A user-friendly software was developed based on the ELT-PSO model to avoid extensive and expensive experimentations without requiring considerable ML understanding. Difference recorded by GUI was less than 2% with experimental yield.

RESUMO

In this research work, Bi2O3, Bi2O3/GO and Bi2O3/CuO/GO nanocomposites have been synthesized via an eco-friendly green synthesis technique, solgel route and co-precipitation method respectively for the assessment of antibacterial activity as well as in vivo toxicity. The XRD patterns confirm the formation of Bi2O3, Bi2O3/GO and Bi2O3/CuO/GO nanocomposites showing monoclinic structures. Crystallite size and lattice strain are calculated by Scherrer equation, Scherrer plot and Willimson Hall plot methods. Average crystallite size measured for Bi2O3, Bi2O3/GO and Bi2O3/CuO/GO nanocomposites by Scherrer equation, Scherrer plot and WH-plot methods are (5.1, 13.9, 11.5)nm, (5.4, 14.2, 11.3)nm and (5.2, 13.5, 12.0)nm respectively. Optical properties such as absorption peaks and band-gap energies are studied by UV-vis spectroscopy. The FTIR peaks at 513 cm-1, 553 cm-1 and 855 cm-1 confirms the successful synthesis of Bi2O3, Bi2O3/GO and Bi2O3/CuO/GO nanocomposites. The antibacterial activity of synthesized Bi2O3, Bi2O3/GO and Bi2O3/CuO/GO nanocomposites is examined against two gram-negative (Escherichia coli and pseudomonas) as well as gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus) at dose 25 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg by disk diffusion technique. Zone of inhibition for Bi2O3, Bi2O3/GO and Bi2O3/CuO/GO at dose 40 mg/kg against E. coli (gram - ve) are 12 mm, 17 mm and 18 mm respectively and against Pseudomonas (gram - ve) are 28 mm, 19 mm and 21 mm respectively. While the zone of inhibition for Bi2O3/GO and Bi2O3/CuO/GO at dose 40 mg/kg against B. cereus (gram + ve) are 8 mm and 8.5 mm respectively and against S. aureus (gram + ve) are 5 mm and 10.5 mm respectively. These amazing results reveal that Bi2O3, Bi2O3/GO and Bi2O3/CuO/GO nanocomposite as a kind of antibacterial content, have enormous potential for biomedical applications. In addition, the in vivo toxicity of synthesized Bi2O3/CuO/GO nanocomposite is investigated on Swiss Albino mice at dose of 20 mg/kg by evaluating immune response, hematology and biochemistry at the time period of 2, 7, 14 and 30 days. No severe damage is observed in mice during whole treatment. The p value calculated by statistical analysis of hematological and biochemistry tests is nonsignificant which ensures that synthesized nanocomposites are safe and non-toxic as they do not affect mice significantly. This study proves that Bi2O3/CuO/GO nanocomposites are biocompatible and can be explored further for different biomedical applications.

RESUMO

This research analyzes the impacts of intellectual capital (IC) and the balancing power of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on innovation growth (IG) in Pakistan's SME sector. A quantitative approach on smart PLS has been applied through the SEM model, backed by a survey to gather primary data from 256 participants of Pakistan's SME sector. A significant effect of human capital on Pakistani firms' IG was identified. In contrast, the effect of structural capital was determined to be insignificant over the IG of Pakistani firms. On the other hand, the customer capital's effect was also significant over Pakistani firms' innovation growth. Little moderation of EO between human capital and IG has been determined. The moderations of "EO between human capital and innovation growth" and "EO between structural capital and innovation growth" were insignificant. However, the moderation of EO between customer capital and IG was significant. The scope of this study is limited to firms in Pakistan and can be extended to firms in other regions, which can provide broad findings.

RESUMO

This study investigates the multifaceted role of green innovation among green intellectual capitals (GICs) on business sustainability in Pakistan's manufacturing sector. A quantitative method based on the SEM model on SmartPLS and Stata analysis was used, which was supplemented by a survey of 800 Pakistani SME sector supply chain-associated participants. The findings revealed a significant effect of green intellectual capital and green innovation on business sustainability, while structural capital was found to have a significant moderating effect on the business sustainability of Pakistani firms. It has been determined that the relationship between GIC and BS has a strong moderation of green innovation. Furthermore, the relationship and impact of GICs on the business sustainability of Pakistani manufacturing companies were statistically significant, and green innovation played a moderating role between GIC and business sustainability. Therefore, it has been suggested that Pakistani manufacturing companies participate in eco-innovation to progress business sustainability.

RESUMO

This study measures the association between resources and the atmosphere; social and environmental aspects of energy production have become critical. In this context, the aim of this research is to explore the mediating effect of renewable energy patents in developing potential frameworks for energy policy viewpoints on the climate. The study took panel data from 2010 to 2017 and used a non-radial data envelopment analysis (DEA) process and panel data model for 30 Chinese provinces. The findings indicate that between 2010 and 2017, the average environmental efficiency index (EPI) of Chinese areas increased by 9.88%. When firms' internal variables are proxied by their commodity (revenue), the relationship term's point approximate coefficient is about 0.05. This magnitude means that a 1% rise in a company's assets will result in a 5% increase is estimated to be about 0.157, implying that a 1% rise in firm leverage is correlated with a 15.7%. Finally, based on the study results, some policy implications were proposed.

RESUMO

The purpose of the studies was to evaluate an in-vitro anti-mycobacterial activity of Aloe vera and Allium sativum against MDR-MTB, their cytotoxicity and mutagenicity. Four extracts of Aloe vera and Allium sativum were prepared by Soxhlet apparatus and their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC's) were determined by BACTEC MGIT960 system against multi drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-MTB) isolates, collected from pediatric patients. Fractions of Aloe vera and Allium sativum extracts were separated using glass column chromatography, followed by evaluation of cytotoxicity and mutagenicity by tetrazolium salt (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and Ames test, respectively. Out of four extracts, ethanol extracts of Aloe vera and Allium sativum exhibited activity at MIC 5mg/mL to 7mg/mL and 3mg/mL to 5mg/mL, respectively and IC50 by MTT assay for combination of all fractions were 278.3mcg/100µL and 270.8mcg/100µL and in Ames assay M.I of TA98 were 0.14 and 0.07 and M.I of TA100 were 1.14 and 0.44, respectively. Aloe vera and Allium sativum extracts showed anti-mycobacterial activity against MDR-MTB isolates so, MIC of ethanol extracts of each plant and fractions of column chromatography had been checked. The MTT and Ames tests depicted that ethanol extracts of Aloe vera and Allium sativum were non-cytotoxic and non-mutagenic, and can be used in treatment of patients suffering from MDR-MTB.

RESUMO

The restoration of mechanical properties is desired for creating the self-healing coatings with no corrosion capabilities. The encapsulation of epoxy resins is limited by various factors in urea and melamine formaldehyde microcapsules. An improved method was developed, where epoxy resin was encapsulated by individual wrapping of poly(melamine-formaldehyde) and poly(urea-formaldehyde) shell around emulsified epoxy droplets via oil-in-water emulsion polymerization method. The synthesized materials were characterized analytically. The curing of the epoxy was achieved by adding the [Ni/Co(2-MI)6].2NO3 as a latent hardener and iron acetylacetonate [Fe(acac)3] as a latent accelerator. Isothermal and non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetric analysis revealed lower curing temperature (Tonset = 116 °C) and lower activation energies (Ea ≈ 69-75 kJ/mol). The addition of microcapsules and complexes did not adversely alter the flexural strength and flexural modulus of the epoxy coatings. The adhesion strength of neat coating decreased from 6310.8 ± 31 to 4720.9 ± 60 kPa and percent healing increased from 50.83 to 67.45% in the presence of acetylacetonate complex at 10 wt% of microcapsules.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite rapid advances and discoveries in medical imaging, monitoring therapeutic efficacy for malignant gliomas and monitoring tumor vasculature remains problematic. The purpose of this study is to utilize optical coherence angiography for vasculature characterization inside and surrounding brain tumors in a murine xenograft brain tumor model. Features included in our analysis include fractional blood volume, vessel tortuosity, diameter, orientation, and directionality. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, five tumorous mice models at 4 weeks of age were imaged. Human glioblastoma cells were injected into the brain and allowed to grow for 4 weeks and then imaged using optical coherence tomography. RESULTS: Results suggest that blood vessels outside the tumor contain a greater fractional blood volume as compared with vessels inside the tumor. Vessels inside the tumor are more tortuous as compared with those outside the tumor. Results indicate that vessels near the tumor margin are directed inward towards the tumor while normal vessels show a more random orientation. CONCLUSION: Quantification of vascular microenvironments in brain gliomas can provide functional vascular parameters to aid various diagnostic and therapeutic studies. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

RESUMO

The structural, electronic and thermoelectric properties of AZr1-xMxO3 (A = Ba, Ca, Sr; M = Al, Cu, x = 0.25) without and with an oxygen vacancy (Vo) have been unveiled using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof Generalized Gradient Approximation (PBE-GGA) functional along with Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Jonhson (TB-mBJ)approximation based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) in the framework of WIEN2k code for memristors applications. Moreover, isosurface charge density plots have been calculated by using Vienna ab initio Simulation Package (VASP) simulation code. The analysis of structural parameters reveals that substituting Zr4+ with Al3+ and Cu2+ causes the lattice distortion which tends to increase in the presence of Vo along with dopant. The study of band structure, density of states (DOS) and isosurface charge density plots predict the enhanced charge conduction and formation of conducting filaments (CFs) for all composites with dopant and/or Vo. Moreover, spin polarized density of states for Cu doped composites has also been calculated to confirm the large exchange splitting of Cu-3d states. The thermoelectric characteristics of considered composites have also been explored using the Boltztrap code to better explain the semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. Thermoelectric parameters confirm the semiconductor nature of all composites, ensuring the compatibility for memristors and thermoelectric devices applications. In addition to this spin polarized thermoelectric behavior of Cu doped composites that ensure the contribution of spin down (↓) states of Cu for charge transport mechanism. The SrZrCuO3+Vo composite is found most promising candidate followed by BaZrCuO3 for memristors applications while, CaZrCuO3 is found most suitable amongst studied composites for thermoelectric devices.

RESUMO

This study aims to determine the moderating role of IT capability between green intellectual capital (GIC) and business sustainability in China's manufacturing sector. A quantitative analysis approach is applied to the primary data collected through a close-ended survey questionnaire from 1000 supply chain employees of China's manufacturing industry. Results revealed that the association and effect of GIC on the business sustainability of Chinese manufacturing companies were statistically significant, while the moderating role of IT capability between GIC and business sustainability was also found. Notably, all variables indicating GIC (i.e., green human capital (GHC), green structural capital (GSC), and green relationship capital (GRC)) affected business sustainability positively and significantly, whereas the moderation of IT capability was specific to GSC and GRC. Hence, it has been recommended to the Chinese manufacturing companies to integrate IT infrastructure in their firms to enhance business sustainability. However, this research was limited to the Chinese manufacturing sector and cannot be generalized to other sectors or countries.

RESUMO

This study aimed the optical imaging of malignant and normal skin tissues with multimodal wide-field fluorescence polarization imaging (WF) technique, by using methylene blue as fluorescence dye. We present optical imaging of skin tissues by different techniques, including reflectance, fluorescence, and polarization imaging for early detection of skin cancer. We collected the reflectance confocal images at 390 and 500 nm. For wide-field fluorescence images, specimens were stimulated at 640 nm and images were collected between 670 and 710 nm. The correlation of the regarded optical modalities with histopathology (H&E), their potentials, capabilities, and limitations to detect skin lesions are discussed. The advantages of multimodal imaging of skin tissues are analyzed to divulge possibilities for precise tumor boundary detection and their classification for malignant and nonmalignant skin tissues. Prior to imaging, the cells were stained in aqueous MB (a dye approved by FDA).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare the natural radioactivity and excess life time cancer risk (ELCR) factor of soil in different regions of Pakistan during last decade. Soil contains various elements and compounds including naturally occurring radioactive elements (238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs). Human being, animals and plants are in health risk by contaminations of natural radioactivity in soil and environmental radiometric pollution. Transferring of large amount of the natural radioactive elements in human body by nutrients may cause carcinogenic effects in human body. Pakistani soil has six types as Indus Basin Soil, Bongar Soil, Khaddar Soil, Indus delta soil, Mountainous soil and Sandy Desert Soil. In some northern region of Pakistan, naturally occurring radioactive rocks like uranuium-238 and iridium concentrations present in Gharwandi, Aram, Kingri S, Vitakri Fort Munro, Dera Bugti, Kohlu and Sibbi districts. METHODS: In this reviewed data, gamma rays spectroscopy used to determine the concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K with the help of High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. Only the data of HPGe detector collected because of comparisons of different regions of Pakistan. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Mostly, different gamma rays energy peaks of relevant daughter radionuclides of radioactive element were used such as the energy peak lines of daughter radionuclides 214Pb (295.21 and 352 KeV) and 214Bi (609 and 1,120 KeV) used for calculating the 226Ra concentration in soil. In the recent study, it is concluded that average values of concentrations of natural radioactivity in soil in central and north regions of Pakistan are higher than permissible limit but found permissible range in south region of Pakistan. Mean values of ELCR factor were found higher, equal and lower in central, north and south regions than permissible limit, respectively. Generally, no serious health hazard due to natural radioactivity in soil were found.

RESUMO

The purpose of this manuscript is to analyze the quantity, quality and disorders of blood components and blood parameters before and after addition of five different concentrations i.e. (0µl, 10µl, 20µl, 30µl and 40µl) of ethyl alcohol (ethanol) in the blood of Brest cancer patient. We diagnose the disorders in cells count, shape of cells, size of cells and many blood parameters like Hemoglobin, Red blood cells distribution width, Mean corpuscular volume, Platelet crit, Mean platelet volume, Platelet distribution width, Hematocrit, Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, Cholesterol, Low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, high-density lipoprotein, Urea and Total Billirubin by using hematological techniques. We have noted that the number of WBCs and RBCs decrease sharply while platelet cells increases gradually. We also have revealed the shape changes like WBCs show disintegration around RBCs and clumping of Platelet cells. This work will be extended towards the three dimensional imaging using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for monitoring the level of Ethanol in blood via vasculature maps both for the normal and breast cancer.

RESUMO

This work presents a pilot method of hematological diagnosis about changes in: shape, size and rouleaux formation, cell count of leucocytes and platelet cells in the presence of different glucose [C6H12O6] and water [H2O] concentrations. The 2D microscopic images after addition of ten different glucose concentrations to normal blood (0 mM- 450 mM) revealed the lyses (disintegration) of white blood cells (WBCs). RESUMO

The objective of this study was to measure the effects of glucose and salt level on white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets (PLTs) in the blood of a leukemic patient by using a white light microscope. Different concentrations of glucose and salt in the range of 0 mM to 500 mM were admixed in the blood sample to prepare blood smear. We revealed that shape of erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets changes and form aggregates. Increasing concentrations of glucose cause to increases aggregation process of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. And the increasing concentration of sodium chloride causes to increase rouleaux formation and aggregation of platelets but dehydration due to increased sodium chloride concentration causes to break the aggregation of white blood cells. Comparison of CBC reports of these samples with and without analytes shows that total leukocyte count (TLC) decreases gradually towards normal ranges of leukocytes which is favorable in the treatment of leukemia but at the same time decreasing level of hemoglobin HGB, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and increasing level of red blood cell (RBCs) causes to reduce oxygen supply which is in favor of cancer growth and anemia. This work provides us the base for translation this in vitro study towards the in vivo case of blood microvasculature as a non-invasive methodology.
